Reasons to Recycle Your Wooden Pallets
Unfortunately, wooden pallets have a shelf life when it comes to being pallets, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be turned into something else. Whether it’s because you care about money or you care about the environment, it’s really important that you don’t simply chuck unusable wooden plates in with your general waste for landfill. Whether you refurbish them or take them to be recycled, you’ll find that they will be able to live another life long after you have finished with them as pallets.
Saving Money
As any business owner knows, sending waste to landfill costs you money. Local councils only allow companies a small amount of wastage before they are charged. Sending goods to be recycled is either free or far cheaper than sending them for landfill.
There’s another way you can save money too, and that’s by having wooden pallets refurbished. Those that aren’t completely beyond repair can be refurbished by being taken apart and having the good bits rebuilt with good planks. The bits of wood that were beyond repair can be recycled, whilst your newly refurbished pallets will be saving you money, reducing the need to buy new ones.
Saving the Environment
Sending wood to landfill is an ecological disaster. Wood needs to be burned, which releases greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. Sending wood to be recycled prevents this from happening. Your old pallets could become pathways in parks, or they could be used to make children’s play equipment. They could shredded and used in outdoor flooring, such as in a play park, or perhaps used in the construction industry.
Preserving Pallets
The best way to avoid having to get rid of old pallets is by preserving them in the first place. Storing pallets off the ground on pallet racks will prevent them from getting damp and rotting. You can buy pallet storage and bin racks in Ireland from www.rackzone.ie/bin-racks. If they are stored outside on the ground, then they can also be covered with a tarpaulin to increase their life.
As you can see, it makes good business sense to recycle old wooden pallets, but it also makes good environmental sense. Proving that you have done what you can to refurbish or recycle old wooden pallets will also look good in your environmental audit, making your business more investment-worthy.
