Maybe you have never wondered what the reason is, but surely you have noticed that when we bring the phone to our faces to make a call, the screen of this goes off. Otherwise we could hang up the call with the ear.
This very simple function is the responsibility of the SAR sensor or proximity sensor. It is a small chip that fulfills a much more important task than this, to control that the mobile is safe for our health.
SAR is an acronym and could be translated as specific absorption rate. So, it sounds very far-fetched, but it is a measure of the amount of radio frequency energy absorbed by a tissue that is exposed to an electromagnetic field. How much energy can our body absorb from the electromagnetic field emitted by mobiles?
Yes, mobiles emit radiation, but like many other objects or even ourselves. As long as the radiation is low it should not be harmful. Furthermore, the electromagnetic radiation of mobile phones is not ionizing, that is, it is not capable of modifying tissues or our DNA and, therefore, it is not carcinogenic.
Each country establishes the limits of this type of radiation that can be emitted by the mobiles that are sold in the market, to ensure that they are safe amounts for users and this is also the responsibility of the SAR sensor. In mobiles, tablets and other similar devices we can find several of these sensors for each device so that together they are more sensitive to electromagnetic fields.
SAR sensors control that the radiation of the mobile is kept at adequate levels and alerts if this radiation is being dangerously triggered. But this is not all, it is also dedicated to controlling the fluctuations of the electric fields that surround the mobile.
Those fluctuations what indicate to the sensor is that the mobile is approaching another object or a body like ours. Human beings are also surrounded by an electric field, although very weak and when we approach the mobile, the SAR sensor detects the change that occurs when the electric field of the mobile collides with ours and alerts the processor to turn off the touch screen.
Problem solved, well, not entirely. When the phone is starting up, its components begin to work and that electric field is altered, so during that process it was decided that the SAR sensor should remain inactive so as not to turn off the screen when we need it the most.
Although it is not necessary, if you want to check the level of radiation emitted by your mobile phone or the one you want to buy, each year the ranking of the models that emit the most radiation is published. In 2019, for example, the list was topped by the Xiaomi Mi A1 and Xiaomi Mi Max 3. The first reaches a SAR of 1.75 . Of the top 16 on the list, 6 of them were from Xiaomi. This is because its architecture reduces the radiation emitted less, depending on the placement of the chips.
All, including those of Xiaomi, comply with the safety regulations imposed by the European Union and the rest of the countries, so we should not worry, nor should we reject one of these models for this reason. What’s more, over the years, smartphones have become increasingly robust and emit less radiation.
