Choosing plants for the workplace
Remember this golden rule: Before you decide which plants to buy, choose the location where you will put them.
This is a most common error. It is impossible to force a light-loving plant into a dark corner. Make sure that you are not doing it backwards.
The things you need to look out for:
- There is plenty of space.
Plants need space just like humans to thrive.
Avoid trying to squeeze plants behind or between furniture. It will make it hard for them to breathe as the airflow will be blocked.
A healthy plant with strong stems will require good airflow. This helps the plant to maintain a better temperature, reduce humidity and resist certain diseases.
- Keep away from pedestrian traffic.
You probably have a few areas that are high traffic, such as the entrances, restrooms and break rooms.
Plants in these areas should be placed with extreme caution. It is possible that someone will bump into a planter, knock it over and kill the plant.
It’s best to observe a room in high traffic to determine where the traffic is flowing. Keep your plants out of harm’s way. For Plants for Trade, visit https://www.palmstead.co.uk/Content.aspx?content=2
- Temperature and humidity, including during weekends.
This is the most common plant killer. You may have chosen an area that is ideal during the day, but what about weekends? What if the AC is turned off and the windows are all closed?
Plants need to be kept away from air conditioners and heaters that remove moisture.
Once you have decided where to plant your plants, the next thing is to select a variety that will flourish in that specific location.
What size plants should I buy?
You should start by narrowing down your choices based on the size. Keep in mind the following:
- Where will you plant it? Floor plants are generally taller than plants placed on a desk, table or window.
- Plants grow. It’s best to purchase a smaller plant than you want.
- What type of appearance do you desire? What is your preferred height for the plant? Are you looking for an accent piece, or bold statement? These questions will determine the size of your plant.
- Remember the surrounding objects’ sizes. A small plant placed on top of a huge table may look ridiculous, but a large one might dwarf the tiny table right next to it. Keep your plant proportionate to the size of the rest of the room.
