Cleaning at the top of the World

Ever wondered how they manage to clean windows high up? Imagine how difficult it would be to wash windows twenty stories up. This must be the most dangerous job in the world. Part mountaineer, part window cleaner!

The equipment they carry has to be a little more than the standard window cleaning gear. They will have a rope protector and safety rope. Also, they’ll carry a rope-grabbing device, a descent system, a lanyard, and suction cup. This equipment not only ensures their safety, but also allows them to clean the glass quickly and efficiently. The cleaner is attached to a roof anchor while working. The windows will be cleaned while the cleaner descends to lower floors.

The cleaners used to only use the ledge and their free hand to grip the frame. This practice was finally discontinued as there were too many accidents. Then, leather belts with anchors were introduced. Scaffolds, the next safety item to be introduced, were both safer and more convenient. Today, the most commonly used tools are a boom carriage, portable davit, and Bosun chair. For details on PASMA Courses, visit https://globalflt.com/services/pasma-courses/

The boom consists of a scaffold with multiple cleaners. This is a piece of fixed equipment that is placed on the roof and can be used when needed. It was decided that a carriage would be a better option as it is mounted on a rail of the roof and can move left or right. It can hold multiple workers, and is more flexible than a boom.

Portable davits are more efficient and cheaper than booms, allowing access to multiple areas with multiple workers. Bosun’s chair is used to suspend someone from a rope in order to do work in the air. It was originally a heavy canvas or plank that was used to suspend a person from a rope. They now have safety features similar to those in rock climbing harnesses.
