There are many different types of machinery which can be used to make our jobs easier. Using specialist equipment is something that many people will do in their job – from construction site workers to manufacturing workers. Machines like this hydraulic power unit make the job easier for us and also mean that work can be completed more quickly, but when you are operating machinery, it is very important to ensure that you are doing so safely.
Failing to observe the safety procedures when operating machinery can have dire consequences. Here are some of the things to be aware of to make yourself safer if you work with machinery…
Know what PPE can Protect you – Using safety clothing and equipment is essential when using many types of machinery. On a construction site, hi vis clothing should always be worn to reduce the risk of accidents, and some machinery should only be operated when using other safety equipment. Hard hats, protective eyewear and safety boots with steel toe caps are a few examples of this.
Check the Area – Make sure that the area that the machine will be operating in is clear and doesn’t have any objects that might obstruct or damage the machine around it. You also should make sure that there are no people in the area where they might be at risk.
Ensure that the Machine is in Good Condition – Making sure that you thoroughly check the machine before you start using it is really important. This way you will be able to look out for any signs of damage which could affect how the machine operates, rendering it dangerous. Of course, you will not necessarily be able to spot everything, but this is a good way to see any obvious signs of the machine being dangerous to use.
Ensure that anyone using it has Suitable Training – Anyone who is going to be using machinery should always have received the correct training to do so. For the same reason that you are not allowed to drive a car without a licence, using machinery without the correct training can put not only the operator of the machine but also people around them at great risk.
