When you rent a storage unit how long do you have to commit for and how can you cancel should you need to?
Minimum Rental Periods
The shortest period for which most storage facilities will let you hire a storage unit is one month. We have found that a few facilities will allow a week’s hire of a small storage unit but one month is the minimum for most.
Rolling Monthly Contracts
Most storage agreements are on a rolling monthly basis meaning they automatically renew each month unless you cancel. If you’re unsure how long you will need storage for then this type of agreement is best.
Long-Term Discounts
Longer lets of 6 months + will also get you a discount on a weekly basis, so please ask about long term storage rates.
Giving Notice to Leave
Check the amount of time you have to give notice in your contract. The typical amount of time given is between 7 and 14 days. Ensure you give enough time to vacate the storage unit to avoid being charged for the remainder of the month.
Changing Your Mind Last Minute
You can usually extend a rental but not reduce it mid-month, so you may have to pay for unused days.
