The architectural style of the Victorians
In Britain, we owe an enormous amount of thanks for our architectural style today to the Victorians. That’s probably not much of a surprise when you consider the Empire that they were able to build. Although it may not have been the largest in terms of landmass it spanned the globe. The saying that the sun never set on it was true as there would always be some part of the British Empire where it was daytime. However, the sun did metaphorically set and now we find ourselves living with their tastes and designs.
Residential Architects, like those such as quattro design.co.uk, still take into account what the Victorians gave us. First and foremost they themselves were influenced heavily by the Romans and Greeks. They were able to read and access their stories in History and even visit Italy and Greece to be inspired by the designs. This is the reason why you find that many public buildings in this country feature columns and corniches similar to what you would see in Rome and Athens.
Even in our domestic housing we also begin to see the effects of the Victorians. Even now the introduction of the Townhouse and the promenade that begin to appear in modern housing estates all have a nod towards the Victorians. They were also one of the first people to universally use brick for building affordable houses and this began to be the general trend.
