How forest school develops children’s confidence

Forest school is an extracurricular activity that many schools have chosen to undertake as it helps young people to learn a number of valuable skills as well as helping them with their confidence. It is one of the items that many schools will ensure they promote on the Websites for schools to help show prospective parents the kinds of activities that their children will be able to enjoy as a part of the school day.

There are a number of ways that forest school can help improve confidence and other related traits.

Motivation – there are some children that find working in a classroom setting challenging and there are days when all pupils could do with a bit of fresh air. Forest school creates an environment of curiosity as well as a desire to discover new things. The activities that they undertake will be led by the interests of the children.

Self-regulation – some emotions can be difficult to  manage in the school environment and life skills such as safe risk taking and challenging oneself, can be learnt very effectively through forest school. In most cases the children won’t even realise they are learning, as they have so much fun.

Social skills – schools are havens for learning social skills and this is just as true for forest school. The activities that they undertake help to promote the sharing of ideas and tools as well as developing team working. In some cases tasks will be too big for one person to undertake on their own so the children will also learn that it is ok to ask for help and support from others.
