Why make a website with WordPress?

Unfortunately create a site is never a simple thing to do. As I’m sure you already know, to make a website is not enough, unfortunately, to draw it to PC. Do not just draw it in pencil or typesetting it as you do in general with a sheet of note: you must write code.

Thus, it leads to waste hours, days or even months on the damn lines, trying to make the style, entries, graphics, animations and more frustrating aspects of programming. Creating something from scratch is never the easiest solution. Although this is probably the most personal and customized choice, it remains in any case a very ambitious project that requires special technical capabilities to do so, not to mention time.

And you can not declare victory even once that the site can be considered navigable or otherwise completed will always need to update it with interesting and useful content for the user, updating it with new videos, articles, interviews, products, travel, reviews or recipes or with any other content that you plan for your blog, e-commerce or portal .

To solve these problems you can use a CMS.

What is a CMS?

CMS is an acronym, which stands for “content management system”. Despite fears presented well, it is nothing but a software that allows you to publish pages, articles and content in general without putting his hand every time at the same site structure. Using a CMS so you can manage your web site without having to waste time every time but relying to a system.

It’s a little ‘how to make a presentation to your computer: it is certainly not necessary to do everything from scratch, but there is a software platform that helps you. It makes you avoid building everything from the basics so allowing to dedicate only to the content of the slide and, metaphorically, to the page of your website.

There are many CMS out there. Often make themselves known ones that allow drag-and-drop (ability to drag and then add content to the site using the mouse) or similar generally very close is still fledgling. Sometimes allow you to achieve good results but often simply end up impatient.

The task of a CMS is to allow:

  • Customization
  • Pages of the site management
  • Saving of time

And WordPress does all three of these things.

WordPress platform to create and add pages

WordPress actually originated as a CMS for blogs, for simple digital diaries. Now, however, each type of site can be made, with more or less effort, using this system, precisely because of its particular elasticity. With WordPress (in some cases by performing appropriate modifications), you can create:

  • A blog
  • A portal
  • A travel website
  • An eCommerce
  • A corporate showcase
  • An online course

To be more specific WordPress not only it allows you to create your site and add pages but also to manage it in time. But these are more or less the characteristics of each CMS available online but WordPress has many as 7 features that make it stand out among them:

  1. It is old but kept up to date
  2. It is user friendly
  3. Documentation and support
  4. Troubleshooting Forum
  5. Customization with themes
  6. It is open to additions of Plugins
  7. It’s free

Old but always up to date

As stated in Wikipedia WordPress page, the CMS was released way back in 2003. He then 12 years on the shoulders, historical age in comparison to the days of the Internet! However, the development team has never updated it often and continues to release updates almost every month.

This aspect is often not considered enough, but one of the qualities of a good CMS is to protect your site from attack. I know that now you’re thinking that you have not accomplished anything and had not particular enemies out there. My site has been attacked several times from abroad, for no apparent reason. It is all about attempts of those hopes actually a success. In any case, an updated CMS remains always in step with the times and adds, day after day, more and more security systems and block against external attacks; so you can feel comfortable.

WordPress is user friendly

A system for content management created to allow even those without technical knowledge, build and manage a website. Must therefore aim at simplicity, immediacy and provide a user interface so as clear and intuitive as possible.

I assure you that in only half an hour of tweaking on WordPress manage to figure out how to perform the main actions and then how to add an item, page, or how to organize your sidebar. It is important that the platform is quick and easy: it is a tool that you should use, probably, every day and that, perhaps, you will have to share with other employees who may not have your own technical knowledge.

Documentation and support

It is essential during the implementation of a site a bit outside the lines, to refer to a particular function of the code and its operation or even just one of the many WordPress settings and its effects on the entire site which will then sailed by the user.

In WordPress Codex, drawn precisely from the development team, you can find all the necessary tutorial is to start from scratch to do something more advanced.

Has somebody already had your problem

Many CMS and software are well documented but often not enough. In the documentation cannot cover all possible cases and bugs of a site that uses the content management system. It is therefore not said that you are able to find documentation about a problem, for example, which covers the addition of items within the site. If it is a rare problem, or very specific, it is difficult to find him there.

But WordPress is used by many webmasters and bloggers. This is not a tool used internally by some head or company but of a free system, available online and, fortunately, working. For this reason, WordPress has closed the month of November 2015 stating that 25% of the sites that populate the network is based on their platform. As a matter absurd! It means that a site every 4 uses WordPress to add pages or publish articles!

Therefore, if as much as 25% of online content creators using the platform, it is likely that someone has already had to struggle with that your peculiar problem that the documentation does not mention. Just then a very quick search on Google and read the existing threads in the forum. In this way I managed to get to all the problems I faced wanting to change the WordPress code; It has never been necessary to create a new thread and wait for answers.

Customization with themes

Obviously the 25% of online sites are, however, different one another. This is possible thanks to the flexibility to install wordpress themes “rendered with” otherwise your articles and your content.

Once installed WordPress there is already within just a couple of fairly general themes but the internet is full of themes to download and install. It has both of which not free. Obviously free themes are generally those most common and worse realized. Besides the paid themes do not cost much either. Generally, online stores like ThemeForest not asking more than $20 or $30 – of course depends on the complexity of your project.

A theme changes dramatically a managed site with WordPress, completely changing the look and feel. Here are two sites that use WordPress but they do it with various themes: you would have thought it?

If you are quite versed with the code and programming in php, js and css, you can also try to create your own theme. It takes a long time to do it but the result is truly unique!

Changes with plugins

The themes of wordpress distort the appearance but not its operation. The plugin instead go right to change the design of your site, by editing the wordpress platform itself. You could for example use plugin:

  • Add social interaction buttons
  • Add a gallery to an article
  • Add a form on a page
  • Manage not only articles and page but also be able to add reviews, recipes, and other special content
  • Manage an ecommerce (add products, shipments, tags, pricing, shopping cart and more)

They are just examples but already fans realize how much you are actually possibilities. All these things, if done by hand writing code, require a really long time. Someone has already written the code for you and you just install a package in your site.

Similar to what happens with the themes, some free plugin (along with those premium) are available by WordPress itself, in the WordPress Theme Directory; others can be purchased directly from the site of the person who has developed or even by alternative shops like CodeCanyon.

It’s free

Despite everything, WordPress is and remains completely free. If you already share a CMS and the site development costs are very much reduced, allowing you to aim directly hosting and free appearance.

Obviously to WordPress is not a paradise, nor a system full of rainbows and happy unicorns leaping. It’s a great compromise to avoid writing lines and lines of code every time you want to add a page or publish an article but, of course, the bugs and problems. But the big difference is the attention and the support he has received. In doing so it easily every flaw, newly discovered, can be fixata.

But if you go to put his hand to the code, things get more complicated but, in general, you will feel pampered by the support forum. If you are an expert programming you can try your hand in making your own personal theme and then make a site much more complex than just a blog.
