5 Tips for Getting Involved in on Campus Clubs

There are all kinds of clubs that you can join when you’re in college and it can be hard to decide if you want to get involved, and if you do, which one is best for you. If you are thinking about getting more involved on campus and want to feel more connected with the people that you go to school with, then you might want to look into what club options are available to you. Here are 5 tips for getting involved in on campus clubs.

1. Check out Booths at School Fairs

No matter what school you go to, unless you’re studying with USC Online, there are going to be huge fairs on your campus all the time. And at each one of these fairs all of the campus clubs are going to have various booths that are doing their best to reach out and find new recruits. Visiting these booths is a great way to meet all kinds of people from your school and find out what their clubs are like and whether or not they would be a good fit for you.

2. Attend Meetings

Once you find a few clubs that you are interested in, you should start going to their meetings. Most clubs meet weekly and have certain goals that they set and assignments that they give each member. Otherwise, they might just meet to discuss ideas that they find important. Either way, you won’t know whether or not the club is right for you until you start attending meetings.

3. Find a Friend to Join with You

If you’re feeling a bit nervous about showing up to a bunch of club meetings alone, then you might want to find a friend who you think is interested in the same ideas. You may have to find a different friend to go with you to each meeting, but you can give them all a try and see if any of them are fun, and whether or not you both like them.  As you get more comfortable with the group then you might have an easier time going to subsequent meetings alone.

4. Look for Course Credit

Depending on the type of club that you decide to join, you might be able to get college credit for some of the work that you do. For example, if you join an activist group that helps to promote policies that help the school, then you might be able to get college credit for these activities. Either way, you should check to see if there’s a possibility to earn college credit with the work that you contribute to the club.

5. Build a Relationship with Club Leadership

No matter which club you decide to join, it’s always a good idea to try to get close with the group’s leaders. Find out what it is that they do and what it takes to do their jobs. If you can do this then you can move up the rungs of the ladder much more quickly and it will be much easier to get letters of recommendation from those in leadership if you decide to apply for jobs that are correspond with club activities.
